Dungeon and Dragon Magazine, RIP

I just read on the WOTC website that Paizo is going to cease publication of the two most important gaming magazines in the history of gaming, Dragon and its partner magazine, Dungeon.

Read all about it!

Looks like that content is going to be distributed online. Hmmm, will WOTC make portions of its website accessible only to subscribers as many other websites do?

FWIW, I think the yanking of the licenses from Piazo is merely the latest in a long line of errors of judgement by WotC. This one hurts not only Wizards but the whole of the RPG hobby, as it removes the two best known periodicals from magazine stands, and from the hands of devoted 3E fans. What a great way to maintain consumer loyalty and build the base of RPG fans. - Gary Gygax

If the magazines were doing poorly, WotC wouldn't care if Paizo put out others. No, it's just the opposite. They're doing well, and likely WotC products--probably specifically adventures--aren't doing as well as WotC wants. There's been some loud voices at WotC crying that Dragon and Dungeon (particularly Dungeon) are too good a value. They're too good for the customer, and smart customers buy them rather than regular products. This was true when WotC put out the magazines, and it's been true under the Paizo banner as well. I'm guessing declining sales gave these voices the evidence they needed to axe the magazines. - Monte Cook

New Monster: Flaming Flail

I use a figure based campaign, and a lot of the 3E monster minis are cool, but I have no desire to use them as they are depicted in 3E, so I make them into entirely new monsters with 2E stats. A good example is the Blood Golem of Hextor. I think it is kind of a stupid monster as described in the 3E Fiend Folio, so I'm making it an automaton in my game.

Here are the stats. It is basically a flame throwing tank.

Automaton: Flaming Flail

CLIMATE/TERRAIN: Any land or subterranean
FREQUENCY: Very Rare
ORGANIZATION: Solitary
ACTIVITY CYCLE: Any
DIET: Nil
INTELLIGENCE: Low (5-7)
TREASURE: Nil
ALIGNMENT: Neutral
NO. APPEARING: 1-5 (1)
ARMOR CLASS: 2
MOVEMENT: 8
HIT DICE: 10
THAC0: 11
NO. OF ATTACKS: 3
DAMAGE/ATTACK: 1d10+6/1d10+6/ 5d6 (oil of fiery burning)
SPECIAL ATTACKS: See below
SPECIAL DEFENSES: See Below
MAGIC RESISTANCE: 100% to mind affecting
SIZE: G
MORALE: Fearless (20)
XP VALUE: 2,000

The flaming flail is a construct designed to cause havoc on the battlefield with its combination attacks of whirling flails and gouts of oil of fiery burning that spew from its mouth like a flame thrower.

Combat: Attacks by the flails are fairly straight forward, however the twin tanks containing large amounts of oil of fiery burning do require some explanation. When the oil is exposed to air , it immediately bursts into flame, inflicting 5d6 points of fire damage to any creature directly exposed to the substance (save vs. spell for half damage). Because it begins burning as soon as it comes out of the mouth of the automaton, it doesn’t get far and this damage is done only to those within 5 feet of the creature. Each tank holds 25 charges of the oil.

As with all automatons, the flaming flail is immune to all mind affecting and fear based attacks.

Stargate Revisited

Well, I've been building my three basic off-world uniforms. I've got the WEP jackets in green, black, and 3-color desert with 6 pocket bdu pants to match. a tight fitting black t-shirt and one in desert tan, web belts for all three, the Magnum Stealth II boots. I've ordered die cut circular velcro for the patches, and am going to order the patches after the next pay check...must be done in stages...

I realize this is all off topic, but maybe once I get my uniforms in a little better shape I'll start a stargate costume blog. I'm not as obsessive about canon screen accuracy as the folks at Stargate 6 and need a place where I can talk about my uniforms without being criticized for not being quite the right shade of olive drab or using the wrong vest.

These are the item that are on the top of my "still need to get ASAP" list:

GENERAL:
9053 GI style Style Black Medium Pistol Belt $9

Blackhawk Omega Medic Vest, Black: Product ID: BH30VT08 $96.00

GARRISON UNIFORMS:
2-Pocket Long Sleeve Super BDU Shirts $29.99
In Midnight Navy Blue and Olive Drab

LawPro Super BDU 6-Pkt Trousers, Mid Navy $29.99

Custom Embroidered Nametape (for OD Green Tape) $2 x 4 for min order

OLIVE DRAB OFF WORLD:
Battle Dress Utility (BDU) Trousers by Tru-Spec $24.99

DESERT OFF WORLD:
9" Tactical Boots • Desert Tan size 10.5 $39.95

Web-tex Tactical Vest Sand £56.95

9053 GI style Style Tan Medium Pistol Belt (At the Supply Depot in Salem)

ACCESSORIES:
Rubber Bayonet $10.00

Airsoft P-90 and P-90 sling rig

Tactical Hardshell Left-Handed Pistol Holster

PATCHES:
Jacket and Uniform Patches should be set 1/2 inch down the sleeve from the shoulder
seam. Airforce patch goes 1/2 inch below the SG Unit Patch.

Next post, back to AD&D 2E, I promise! I'm getting ready to catalog a bunch of new minis I got from Reaper, to photograph the minis I have from Unhallowed, and to get back to serious monstrology.
